What Other Types of Art Do I Create?

When people ask me, “What other types of art do you create?” I always have to pause—because honestly, my creative journey has taken me in so many directions. Art, for me, isn’t just about drawing or painting; it’s about exploring, experimenting, and finding joy in making things with my hands (and sometimes making a mess along the way).

Painted Boxes & Handmade Gifts

As a kid, I loved drawing with crayons and markers like any child. When I was older, I’d go to the craft store, pick out little cardboard boxes, and paint designs on them. Instead of wrapping gifts, I’d give them in hand-painted boxes—so the box itself became part of the present. It’s a tradition I still love, and I have fond memories of painting with my niece Sidney, who often ended up covered in paint herself!

Collage, Beads, and Jewelry

In high school, I got into making my own beads out of strips of colored magazine paper. I’d roll them into little triangles, glue them, and string them into necklaces. People at school would ask where I got them, and I’d proudly say, “I made them!” I also enjoyed making collages, cards, and even my own wrapping paper using stamps and magazine cutouts.

Jewelry-making has always been a creative outlet for me. I’ve made necklaces from Scrabble tiles covered in origami paper, and even repurposed Monopoly pieces into wearable art. There’s something magical about turning everyday objects into something beautiful and unique.

Ornaments, Blankets, and Swedish Weaving

My love for painting extended to Christmas ornaments—first ceramic, then glass. I’d make one for each family member, and every year, when my parents decorate their tree, everyone finds their own special ornament. I also learned Swedish weaving at a Relief Society event, creating blankets with sewn-in patterns that I’d give as gifts. And yes, I even learned to crochet around baby blankets!

Window Art & The World of Hearts

During the pandemic, I found inspiration in a Facebook group called “A World of Hearts.” People were putting hearts in their windows to spread love and hope. I started making window displays with hearts, posting them in the group, and soon my windows became a rotating gallery of colorful, heart-filled art.

Photography, Bookmaking, and More

I’ve dabbled in photography, capturing old houses and little moments. I took a bookmaking class with my mom and aunt, and now I have several handmade journals filled with writing, photos, and memories—part scrapbook, part diary.

My Favorite Mediums

I love working with markers, pens, and especially paper. Paper is by far my most-used medium, whether I’m drawing, making collages, or creating window displays. I’ve tried acrylics, watercolors, and even a bit of clay (thanks to my dad, who loves pottery). I’m drawn to rich, jewel tones and bold colors—chalk and watercolor just don’t have the depth I crave.

Art I’d Love to Try

Someday, I’d love to try stained glass or metalwork. I’m fascinated by tactile art—pottery, sculpture, and even shadow art, where a pile of “junk” becomes something beautiful when lit just right. I’m endlessly inspired by artists who turn the unexpected into something familiar and delightful.

The Joy of Creating

For me, art is about curiosity, play, and sharing joy. Whether I’m painting with my nieces and nephews, making jewelry from game pieces, or filling my windows with hearts, I’m always looking for new ways to create and connect. And if things get a little messy along the way? That’s just part of the fun.
